The Story of The Easter Dogwood--Truth or Legend?
Posted by Judy Taylor on
The red buds and dogwoods normally bloom each year right before Easter, so this week we took a buggy ride through the ranch to look at the beautiful blooms. As we rode through the wooded trails, it reminded me of the story of the Easter Dogwood. What is the Easter Dogwood story?
The story says.......
In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
'Twas strong and firm, its branches interwoven.
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown,
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected, this tree shall be
A reminder to all of My agony."
Although it is a beautiful legend....that is exactly what it is. A legend. No where in scripture does it give any reference to the type of tree Christ was crucified on or the name of the dogwood tree mentioned anywhere in scripture. But it is a lovely legend, and a good reminder to remember Christ's sacrificial work of salvation on the cross during this Easter holiday season.
All of us at Lonesome Pine Quilts wish you and your family a very happy and blessed Easter.
HE IS RISEN....just like He said!
